Middle Age

I'm probably one of the older folk out of the group of friends here in Hong Kong. Having seen forty years pass by, of which more than a quarter having spent here in Hong Kong - translating to some long friendships here as well as some important milestone birthdays. So with 2024 rolling in we start to see more of the friend hit 40 years old. One such friend decided to head to Sepang, Malaysia to drive Formula Renaults around the old F1 International circuit. The driving experience is organised by Malaysia's only ex-F1 driver, which involved two days of track days, a mammoth amount of time on the simulators, go karts and finally in the formula Renaults. It was genuinely terrified being in these cars, and despite feeling like I was Tom Cruise in Top Gun, the reality of it all was probably more akin to Driving Miss Daisy.

Racing cars is a lot different to driving a car. Pushing the car to the fullest. At the completion of the first few laps I spun out. One of the kids came over and said "You can go a lot faster". What an exhilarating experience!

The Penultimate Wedding

My high school friends married early, leaving me, the sole unmarried one of the group. Now with Parthy getting married, I think I may now be the sole unmarried one of the university friend group now. I feel fairly neutral about this statement. In any case this post is more about coming back for what could be the last wedding I attend from somebody in my immediate circle of friends. They had wed earlier on the the Thursday but had decided to host a wedding reception on the Saturday at the Ivy. Great seeing all the group, but also the university crew I haven't seen since, probably university. The Computer Science and Engineering crowd that I haven't seen in years. The group moved to a Mexican restaurant, only to be kicked out and we found refuge in the only place where you can consume alcohol and sleep without anybody batting an eyelid. Karaoke.

The talk of the wedding was however the groom who endured a 50, yes, 50 day water fast. Read, not eating anything for fifty days, managing to lose 30 odd kilos before tying the knot. Really fun wedding, great seeing the group, and people that I haven't seen, hung out with, had a beer with in ages. Really enjoying the trips back to Sydney.

Year of the something Dragon

I have come to terms with not having any annual leave, I really have. With the four day long weekend I headed off to Sydney. It's funny to talk to people from Sydney, and they hear that I fly back every couple of months "Don't you get tired?" yet when you talk to people in Hong Kong, they don't even bat an eyelid. Sure, I'm a little tired when I arrive in Sydney and promptly send myself to bed for a couple of hours. I have figured out how to maximise my sleep, it requires and isle seat in the middle section (although I have been re-thinking this stratagem), an eye mask, ear plugs and a neck rest. This formula, not always, but for the most part does ensure some level of sleep before waking in either Hong Kong or Sydney.

2024 is the year of the Wooden Dragon. Chinese New Year, family time, however this year's CNY would be slightly different. Meeting her whole family. The previous sentence isn't short for any reason other that emphasis. I had met her sister and some of her nephews but this was the whole family, siblings, in-laws and parents. Meeting her whole family. There were some nerves, but quietly, I was given a lay-up. Gifts were pre-prepared, heads -up on attire, games for the kids. It would take a monumental stuff up to make a bad impression. Sorry not interesting end to the story other that it all went well. Gung Hei Fat Choy!

Hong Kong Half Marathon

The year was 2007. I was but a 25 year old working at Toshiba. I had started Toshiba a few years earlier as an intern. At the time my boss was an avid triathlete, during lunch times he would run through the national park. He managed to convince myself and another grad to run during lunch, one run led to another, and before long he had convinced us to sign up for a race, the 2007 Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon. Training was actually quite enjoyable, of course back then I had little idea what I was doing, it was just trying to run as much as possible before the race. I remember running 20 odd kms from Earlwood to North Rude, instead of driving one day just to test the legs out. In actual fact, the old boss gave me his old running watch which was my first wearable. That watch would eventually be stolen while in Brazil, on Ipanema but that's another story.

So fast forward, 15+ years later, and this time another colleague. Not an endurance athlete, a guy that just likes to run a half marathon once a year convinced me. Well, not really convinced, he merely said that he was going to sign up because he liked to train for a race once a year. This was enough for me, I too, signed up, giving myself 3 months to prepare myself for another 21 kms. 15 years later, my body is definitely not as fresh as it used to be, my ankles and knees aren't as supple, my heart is definitely not the same, but I'm not starting from zero. I have been running here and there, just as a form of cardio so figure it would be a good way to challenge myself. So what were my goals for this run, well one, to train for something competitive (ie: compete against myself), to enjoy myself, well, but more to see if I could go sub-2 hours and if possible, beat my previous personal best (well my only 21 kms) of 1 hour and 55 minutes. I mean there's got to be a reason why there's so many middle-aged men who are endurance athletes?

Training this time around was enjoyable, I used the Garmin Half Marathon training plan, there were definitely times of enjoyment and moments of frustration. Injuries, weather and motivation all playing some role in a disjointed training block. There were moments I felt fast, moments when I didn't want to run. In the end I really enjoyed training for something, having structure and discipline in my life was really welcomed, not to say that I don't usually have that, but there were times when I did not want to put on my shoes and run, but I still forced myself, and felt great after. Great learning moments. I also dialled in the training. 15 years later and there's a wealth of information online about half marathon plans and nutrition. Big emphasis on zone 2. In the end it brought me back to when i was 25 and the advice my old boss would give me, was still the same, I just didn't understand the purpose back then and probably wasn't disciplined enough.

So, how was it? I loved the run, amazing way to see Hong Kong. I was left a bit frustrated with the crowds, there were a lot of runners, but all an excuse. I managed to get a new PB of 1 hour and 52 minutes for a fairly tough course. But the track from Kowloon through the harbour tunnel back into Victoria Park was amazing. Here are some shots below of the start and finish lines and the carb load!

Christmas

I really wish I had more photos of this four day trip. It was such a good trip, and all I have are hazy memories. Here's what I remember. I arrived back in Sydney on the 23rd of December. We had a room booked in the city, as it was one of, if not my closest friend's (not a) wedding reception. The (not a) wedding dinner was held at the Eight, and it was so good to see everybody, the USYD group, to UTS group. We ended up at a cocktail bar and bar crawled until around 2 am before wrapping the evening up with a kebab.

T'was the night before Christmas. 25th, another friend "I didn't want to steal his thunder, but I'm engaged".  More excellent news. Headed down to Sutherland for the Ng Christmas Dinner. So good seeing all the relos, who for the first time were introduced to "the girl" who managed to show up looking like a "drowned rat". Nervous times meeting the family, for me? No, for her? No, maybe for the family. I got a Spurtle for Christmas.

Christmas Day, another lunch in Blakehurst and dinner in Earlwood. Boxing day, breakfast with Mon, followed by Yumcha with the Chans. A very wholesome weekend, feeling full of love.

Mom's 70th!

Back in Sydney for a couple of days. Making the most of the long weekend trips. Getting used to these short trips. Got to try to make more of an effort with Birthdays, there's only a finite number left!

Home stuff

It has been a busy couple of months, not too sure where the time has gone. Slowly making my way through all the admin, dental check ups, health check ups. It feels like it's never ending.

Put together some almond butter and sauerkraut. Also, obsessed with these pickled beets.
